OpenLDAP for Linux Support Program

Symas has been the principal contributor to the OpenLDAP Project since its inception. Our engineers developed and maintain over 90% of the OpenLDAP code that the Linux distros are shipping. Until recently, we’ve been supporting only our enterprise version of OpenLDAP,  Symas OpenLDAP Gold – but as of this year, that’s changing.

The same team that’s been supporting OpenLDAP for telecoms and Fortune 500 companies can now support your  Linux OpenLDAP software.

Availability

Symas currently offers support for the following Linux distros:

  • Red Hat
  • SuSE
  • Ubuntu/Debian*

*Certain versions applicable. Contact us to learn if your version is supported.

Need OpenLDAP software? We’ve got that too. Our OpenLDAP for Linux packages are designed to work as  a drop-in replacement for the software supplied with your Linux distribution.

If you need enterprise and telecom features, take a look at Symas OpenLDAP Gold.

What You Get

  • Always There. We’re available 24x7x365, with critical issue coverage to ensure you get help when you need it
  • OpenLDAP Experts. Work with engineers who’ve been supporting OpenLDAP since the project began, in configurations ranging from small two- and three-server systems to the biggest, most complicated environments across the globe
  • Backed By the Developers. We employ more OpenLDAP developers than any other organization. We wrote the database, the internals, and just about everything else in OpenLDAP
  • Fixed Price. No cap, no kidding

“Symas has been the principal contributor to the OpenLDAP Project since its inception. We wrote over 90% of the OpenLDAP code that the Linux distros are shipping, and we understand it best.”

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Why is Symas better qualified to support the OpenLDAP supplied by my Linux provider?

A: Symas engineers are the principal contributors to the OpenLDAP project and our support staff has been supporting OpenLDAP in the field for many years. When your Linux provider reports a bug, Symas engineers generally provide the fix anyway, so in a way, we’ve been supporting you all along.

Q: Why are you doing this now?

A: Two major Linux OS providers, Red Hat and SuSE, have announced that they’re withdrawing support for the OpenLDAP server in their current or upcoming releases and that they intend to remove the server entirely at some point in the future. We want to provide a smooth path forward for organizations that are already using OpenLDAP or thinking of using it in the future.

Q: Which Linux distributions do you support?

A: We offer support for OpenLDAP 2.4 on most Linux distributions.

Q: Do you support self-compiled (i.e., customized) versions of OpenLDAP?

A: Yes, for an additional fee we’ll take on support for customized versions of OpenLDAP on a case-by-case basis.

Q: What’s the difference between Symas OpenLDAP Gold and Linux OpenLDAP?

A: There are many differences, but in a nutshell, it comes down to this:

  • Symas OpenLDAP Gold is an enhanced version of OpenLDAP, designed for large-scale, mission-critical deployments. It has performance, stability, and feature enhancements that are not available from stock OpenLDAP, and the Service Level Agreement (SLA) is designed with those mission-critical applications in mind.
  • Linux OpenLDAP is meant to serve as a replacement for the OpenLDAP package provided with your Linux distribution, and is designed to be compatible with that environment. It has exactly the same features as the OpenLDAP that came with your Linux OS. In addition, its SLA is less stringent, with longer resolution times.

Q: Can you fix bugs in the OpenLDAP packages that came with my OS?

A: Unfortunately not. We submit all our bug fixes to the OpenLDAP Project, but we’re not in a position to control whether (or when) your Linux OS provider includes them in a patch release. Our solution is to provide our own Linux OpenLDAP Software packages (link to Linux OpenLDAP Software page here) that you can install instead of your Linux provider’s packages. That way, you can be up and running again quickly and safely.

Q: Do I have to be using Symas’s Linux OpenLDAP packages to get support?

A: No. If you’re running Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6 or 7, we’ll support what you have in production. However, if you run into a bug, the fastest way for you to get patched binaries is to use our Linux OpenLDAP packages.

Q: Do I have to purchase support from Symas or pay a fee to use the Linux OpenLDAP packages?

A: No. There’s no fee for the Linux OpenLDAP packages themselves. However, support does require a contract.

Q: When should I switch to your Linux OpenLDAP packages?

A: There are a few cases where you’d want to migrate immediately to our Symas packages:

  • You want to take advantage of CVE patches or bug-fixes that your distro provider has not made available yet
  • You want a more recent version of OpenLDAP than your Linux vendor provides
  • Your vendor withdraws or stops updating their OpenLDAP server packages
