Linux OpenLDAP

The OpenLDAP maintenance and support program that Linux vendors can’t deliver (but wish they could)

Through the Linux OpenLDAP Support Program, we provide technical support and software maintenance for the versions of OpenLDAP that are included in popular Linux operating systems.

It’s really two programs in one:
  • A support program for the OpenLDAP directories on your existing Red Hat or SuSE Linux systems
  • Replacement, compatible OpenLDAP packages to modernize and upgrade the LDAP directory services of your current Linux OS
Built with flexibility in mind.

You can switch to Symas support now and keep using the OpenLDAP that came with your Linux OS; or if you prefer, switch to our packages and purchase support when you’re ready.

Why Symas?

Until recently, we restricted our support programs to Symas OpenLDAP Gold. Now, however, the same team that’s been supporting OpenLDAP for Telcos and Fortune 500 companies can provide you with support for the OpenLDAP that came with your Red Hat or SuSE Linux distribution.

“Symas has been the principal contributor to the OpenLDAP Project since its inception. We wrote over 90% of the OpenLDAP code that the Linux distros are shipping, and we understand it best.”

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Why are you doing this now?

A: Two major Linux OS providers, Red Hat and SuSE, have announced that they’re withdrawing support for the OpenLDAP server in their current or upcoming releases and that they intend to remove the server entirely at some point in the future. We want to provide a smooth path forward for organizations that are already using OpenLDAP or thinking of using it in the future. We also want raise the bar for OpenLDAP support.

Q: Which Linux distributions do you support?

A: We currently support OpenLDAP for Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6, 7 and 8 (which is the upcoming release). We also support OpenLDAP for SLES 11, 12 and 15. Support for additional distributions may be added in the future; contact us and let us know what you need.

Q: We’re using OpenLDAP from another provider. Can we still purchase support from you?

A: Symas is still developing our roster of supported OpenLDAP versions. Need to request one? Email us now.

Q: Can I purchase support for self-compiled (i.e., customized) versions of OpenLDAP?

A: Yes, as long as the package came from one of our srpms. Support for customized packages is available for a small additional fee.

Q: What’s the difference between Symas OpenLDAP Gold and Linux OpenLDAP?

A: There are many differences, but in a nutshell, it comes down to this:

  • Symas OpenLDAP Gold is an enhanced version of OpenLDAP, designed for large-scale, mission-critical deployments. It has performance, stability, and feature enhancements that are not yet available from stock OpenLDAP. The Service Level Agreement (SLA) is designed with those mission-critical applications in mind.
  • Linux OpenLDAP is meant to serve as a replacement for the OpenLDAP package provided with your Linux distribution, and is designed to be compatible with that environment. It has exactly the same features as the OpenLDAP that came with your Linux OS. In addition, its SLA is less stringent, with longer resolution times.

Q: How can you fix bugs in packages that came with my OS?

A: We push all our bug fixes upstream, but we’re not in a position to control whether (or when) your Linux provider includes them in a patch release. Our solution to this? We provide our own packages that you can install instead of your Linux provider’s packages. That way, you can be up and running again quickly and safely.

Q: Do I have to be using your packages to get support?

No. If you’re running recent versions of Red Hat Enterprise Linux or SuSE Linux Enterprise Server, we’ll support what you have in production. If a bug fix is needed, we’ll push the fix upstream and notify your distro provider. However, if you need patched binaries, the fastest way for you to get them is to use our packages because that’s where fixes will appear first.

Q: How often will you be updating the Linux OpenLDAP packages?

A: It’s early days yet, but we think we’ll be updating about four times a year: more often if a critical bug turns up that we think justifies an update.

Q: Do I have to purchase support from Symas or pay a fee to use the Linux OpenLDAP packages?

A: No. There’s no fee for the Linux OpenLDAP packages; however, support does require a contract.

Q: When should I switch to your Linux OpenLDAP packages?

A: There are a few cases where you’d want to change immediately to our Symas packages:

  • You want to take advantage of CVE patches or bug-fixes that your distro provider has not made available yet
  • You want a more recent version of OpenLDAP than your Linux vendor provides
  • Your vendor withdraws or stops updating their OpenLDAP server packages

Q: Is there a complicated migration process when switching to Linux OpenLDAP?

A: No. Our Linux OpenLDAP packages use all the same locations for configuration files and the system-provided versions of most libraries. In most cases, switching to Linux OpenLDAP should just be a drop-in replacement.

Q: Why is Symas better qualified to support the OpenLDAP supplied by my Linux provider?

A: Symas engineers are the principal contributors to the OpenLDAP project, and our support staff has been supporting OpenLDAP in the field for many years. When your Linux provider reports a bug, Symas engineers generally provide the fix anyway, so in a way, we’ve been supporting you all along.
