OpenLDAP works really smoothly
In 2013 the president of Three Turn Productions, Judy Tyrer, reached out to Symas for database help as she was preparing to launch her virtual roleplaying game, called Ever, Jane.
Some of her concerns were:
- Having data set up correctly.
- The need for rapid reads.
- Managing servers.
- Understanding all the technical terms.
Tyrer was using an embedded database, BD Pro, which she found “can’t handle as much data as I have.” Symas Corporation stepped in and offered OpenLDAP support to make sure gamers wouldn’t have to wait for data and that their log ins ran smoothly. While BD Pro still plays a smaller role within the platform, Symas OpenLDAP does the heavy lifting.
“Everything else [system-wise] is problematic but that (OpenLDAP) works really smoothly. It is really awesome, it’s a black box I can really count on. I trust this works. I’m thrilled, I don’t know any other way to say it!”
With Symas’ hosting and management subscriptions Tyrer says it’s the “Most warm, fuzzy thing in the world. I don’t need to panic, I just call Edgar and he’ll take care of it. It’s just a nightmare when you call [other support vendors] and you’re on hold for 45 minutes and you can’t get through and they won’t fix your problem anyway.”
However, Judy says, “You guys are so not like that. It’s much quicker and your customer support is exemplary.”

When Symas took over hosting, it solved 80% of the challenges Tyrer was experiencing, which became even more valuable in the fall of 2017. After an article release in The Guardian, the already popular gaming site received nearly 6,000 unexpected hits. “We just got all of this unexpected user input coming in, and so we ran out of memory . . . you guys fixed it within like, two hours. It was really fast, amazingly awesome.”
Over the years Judy has come to appreciate the level of education and training she receives from Symas with each support call. “It’s hard to learn new technology when you get comfortable with what you know. Shawn was amazing in teaching me about it and helped me through a really tough time. As we worked together I understand more and more about what LDAP can do for me.”
